Chandigarh, September 5:Member of Parliament Ravneet Singh Bittu while speaking in Lok Sabha today drew the attention of the house towards the very provisions of the Constitution which states that the official language of any State or the Union Territory is the mother tongue spoken by the majority of its people.

He expressed surprise over the fact that English language had been recognised as an official language of the Union Territory of Chandigarh. Bittu questioned the basis of this decision when the mother tongue of a majority of the 11 lakh people residing in the city was either Punjabi or Hindi
